funky sweet

Love this one. You've got the perfect cheesy instrumentation down. Great melodies and mixing. The vocal samples are also actually really excellent and well placed throughout.

On the top of my list.

Whirlguy responds:

Ha, thanks man! Love your talkbox tune (:

The Downward Spiral

Heh, I definitely see where you're saying when you mention NIN influences.

You have the background industrial noise down PAT. All the build up to 0:44 was excellent. I wasn't really digging the vox that come in at 0:22. Not that they sounded bad, I just didn't feel they blended as well as maybe more noise would have.

Love the way the piano sounds. The guitar in the first part is great too. It's role in the second half of the song however sounded a little more unpolished to me, almost like the track was clipping at points. I downloaded it and opened it up in Audacity just to have a look and it isn't clipping, but it could just be the quality of the recording (if you actually recorded it).

Also - my apologies if I'm wrong about it being a guitar. For some reason right now I'm having trouble distinguishing the sound.

All that aside, I actually REALLY got into it. Especially great super loud on my headphones. I was disappointed by the length. I felt like it could have really gone on to become something big. Great stuff though.

Fived.

SukiWukiDookie responds:

Wow, all that coming from you is pretty awesome. :D

I kinda had trouble with the vox, wasn't too sure about it myself. But I decided to leave it because I didn't know what else to put. Now that you mention it, I could have use a guitar instead of the voice.. Hmm..

Originally, there was going to be another voice in a higher pitch, but that eventually became the guitar parts you thought you heard.

You're right about the second half, though I'm not sure what specifically. There are some sounds I want in there, and some I don't. I guess I was going for a feeling of timidness, like the sounds were trying but couldn't really get through.

As for the length, I just couldn't think of anything more to add. But your words inspire me, so maybe I'll think of a version with more substance.

Many thanks snayk, I was happily surprised!

lmfao

I heard this the day after KB day, and I've been meaning to write a review.

Seriously funny shit. The lyrics are honestly amazing. I know there's not much to them, but it's just a PERFECT phrase. To me, that alone could make the song, but your delivery is priceless as well, so I guess it's just the full package.

Nice looping too >:D

Goes in a direction I disagree with.

I love how it starts out, and the synths are all well chosen/altered. They sound great together - good bounce going on. I definitely think the right choice was made in the delivery of the vocals. The somewhat monotonous french accent gave the song a little added flavor (because aesthetically, the song is ALL about flavor).

I'm not crazy about the short, jumpy chords you began using in the second verse, and I found the higher toned synth that appeared around the same time sounded a bit too pattern-oriented for my liking. I would have liked it if it floated around, hitting different notes to sound less like a pattern and more like an instrument jamming.

A couple of notes on the vox: I think the "semi-colonoscopy" line should have been dragged to just after "stick me on a tree" (no pause). I noticed that you did it in the second verse, but I still think it ends the verses nicer, especially the first one because it gives you the added time to build up the song.

I didn't like the speech synth at the end :(
It took me out of the song. While everything else felt polished, the speech synth sounded less like it fit in with the song.

As you know, I love the lyrics. Well written, cool use of playing with words and metaphors. Excellent work.

Basically: I really like the song, but I feel like it went in a different direction from where I was hoping -- once you heard the first verse you've pretty much heard it all. I would have enjoyed a slight break from the main melody. A small bridge or something.

I hope I don't sound too harsh. The reason behind my criticism is I like the song enough to know it could be more than it is.

VegetarianMeat responds:

LOL not harsh at all. If you want I'll give you the track files and you can remix dat shiz. Or maybe I might make an alternate version or something. Thanks for the review broheem >:)

Moving.

I feel confident in saying that you are the most distinguished and talented artist in the Audio Portal. Of course that could be put up for debate, as people are attracted to and affected by different genres depending on their tastes, but as far as I'M concerned, I have yet to find someone here with the amount of ability you possess.

Your combination of emotional melodies, perfect haunting sounds, and interesting lyrics is so well defined - it's obvious that you have something to say, and you say it well. This is clear to me because I can truly get lost in your music, just close my eyes and feel.

I can hear a likeness to Radiohead in there. Your voice is similar to Thom Yorke's, though there is a quality in yours that I feel I may prefer.

I've been bored with my music, and I check your userpage once in a while to see what's up. This is exactly what I needed. You are a breath of fresh air. This is the music I wish I had written, the music I feel I completely and totally GET, the stuff that creeps inside and does things to me.

I apologize for the lengthy fanboy review, but I have not reviewed any of your other tracks (many of which I feel as strongly about as this one), and I am just so very moved by your music (as if I hadn't made that evident enough already).

I look forward to seeing your music in the NG store and hearing more from you.

All hail the Bastard.

Kingbastard responds:

Hey man. No apologies needed, always nice to receive positive comments, so, many thanks, much appreciated. (hopefully not too long till the CD is in the Store now, I won't hold my breath though:)
Have a goodun

Wow.. Beautiful!

Believe it or not, I stumbled upon this track thanks to one of those horrible "b" spinoff Flash submissions (your song was the only good part). I'm really glad I happened to be B/Ping though, because I don't often look through a bunch of artists' tracks at a time; I usually only check out 2 or 3 at a time. There's a good chance I may not have found this one, though that's debatable, since it is among your most recent submissions.

This track is just so amazing. Excellent job with every instrument (and I'm counting the samples as instruments because they're so well used/played). I love the percussion, your lead, and just everything.

The melody is very nice and soothing. This song reminds me of some great VG games out there (and the animated version of Tarzan for some reason, lol).

I seriously can't think of ONE SINGLE LITTLE THING this song could use. It's perfect IMO.

Professional sound. Beautifully mixed. Fived and favorited :D

You do fun things with your voice.

I really enjoyed this. Nice job! My only complaint is that I'm getting more out of the left channel than the right.

Loops amazingly well!

Father-of-Death responds:

Yes I know... My mic is really old and it's hard for me to PERFECTLY balance the channels. Thanks for reviewing this! You're a great inspiration of mine. : )

Nice and nostalgic.

Great vibe going on. I really enjoyed the subtle phasing effects. Nice clean retro bass, too. I find it interesting how minimalist the song is (two instruments), and how it doesn't really come across as such.

Gets a little bit repetitive, but what doesn't? Considering it as a background song to a game makes it hardly a flaw. The fact that it's pretty much just one big solo also hides the fact because your lead is going different places all the time.

There are a few small sync issues, but it's nothing too noticable.

I have to take some credit for the title of the song, because immediately when you sent me a preview I told you how it reminded me of 90s point and click games. I was actually surprised when I checked your user page to see you had submitted a new track under said title (I knew instantly what it would be).

Hehe, good job.

VegetarianMeat responds:

OH TAKE ALL THE CREDIT WHY DON'T YOU.

Big soundscape

Excellent chill song. Great retro feel with the synths and drums. You use the word several times in your comments, and RELAXING is definitely a good work for this track.

I love the way sounds come in and out and how it all blends so well. Awesome quality. Beautiful song!

There is a but, but it's a small but (not to be confused with my BIG, HAIRY BUTT). I'm sure you expected someone to comment on it -- a little long! It's not a terrible thing. I actually don't mind the length too much. It's just that sometimes when I feel like a music fix and I go to listen to a song, large track times can be daunting.

HOWEVER, if the song is listened to as it's supposed to be (start to finish, without distractions or interruptions), it's much more enjoyable. I think it would be great for some kind of montage or video game, or pretty much paired with anything visual because the song is so visual itself. Nice atmosphere.

Good job and happy birthday!

btw nice guitarwork lol

Professional sound.

Unfortunately, though, I feel it sounds a little bit generic. The song lacks a bit of an original sound. Good for radio, though.

Technically, it's all good. Every band member is doing his/her job well. It sounds very smooth (maybe a little too smooth).

The vocals blend a little too much. They don't quite stand out. If they were mixed just a little louder, I think it would come out more clear. I also think they might sound better if they were a little bit grittier.

Maybe you guys are too comfortable with your own song, too. I'm not really feeling a passion. It sounds a little bit like you guys are bored.

I understand this review probably feels very harsh -- I'm not shooting you down. The song is good; I'm just trying to offer constructive criticism.

Nice work.

Satoris responds:

Thank you VERY much for the review, and I do not think you're shooting the song down. I appreciate constructive criticism and will definitely use your review as points to bring up when we remix the song. Again, thank you very much for taking the time to listen and review.

I am the video word made flesh.
